YOUR MISSION
Examine. Analyze. Underwrite. Find answers to help people.
YOUR PROFESSION
When you’re an underwriter, what do you do? You’re the risk pro! You act as the contact person for property and casualty insurance brokers and agents. Your expertise is essential to support the work of your colleagues, who submit proposals to you. You study the documents and analyze the risks of each case. Then, after properly examining the file, you submit a quote with the most suitable coverage for the client’s needs.
YOUR PROFILE
A good underwriter is an inquisitive person driven by a strong desire to learn and who shows good judgment. Capable of communicating clearly, they have a good head on their shoulders and an open mind!
YOUR EMPLOYERS
Your career. Your lifestyle. When you’re an underwriter, you work for an insurance company, and you’re in constant communication with your colleagues: P&C insurance agents or brokers.
THE DESIRED SKILLS
- Be inquisitive and applied with excellent analytical abilities
- Have the desire to help thanks to a keen sense of customer service
- Have influence and credibility through a talent for negotiation

THE PREREQUISITES FOR BECOMING AN UNDERWRITER
Although candidates with the relevant training are always prioritized by employers, underwriters don’t need to obtain a P&C insurance representative’s certificate issued by the Autorité des marchés financiers, since they don’t deal directly with consumers, like P&C insurance agents, brokers, and claims adjusters.
DID YOU KNOW?
Since the underwriter manages risk, they must get to know the nature of it. To help them assess risk, they consult reference tools, their colleagues, and their network of expert contacts.
AS JEAN-FRANÇOIS EXPLAINS, IN THE INSURANCE FIELD, WE PUT OUR BRAINS TO WORK!
« The underwriter always has to ask themselves questions about a file and a situation to take all the elements into account. You should never leave room for interpretation, so you have to be clear and precise for everyone. »
